Grammy Nominated Filmmaker and longtime Beach Boys' archivist and compilation producer ALAN BOYD has released a long-awaited solo CD, CHANNEL SURFING, a compilation of Beach Boys-styled tracks he's recorded over a 14 year span.Ê The album includes several "theme songs" that Alan has written, produced, and recorded for Beach Boys' fan conventions over the years, songs that many fans of the group have sought, often unaware that they came from the same person who had also directed the acclaimed 1998 Beach Boys documentary "Endless Harmony."
CHANNEL SURFING is currently available for purchase through the newly-created Boyd Production Group website:

The 16 track album, which includes a pair of recent collaborations with longtime Beach Boys' lyricist STEPHEN KALINICH, was officially released in December 2004. The album has received enthusiastic endorsements from Beach Boys BRIAN WILSON, ALAN JARDINE, and BRUCE JOHNSTON, as well as legendary Beach Boys' engineer STEPHEN DESPER (the "20/20," "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up" albums, among others) who posted the following on the Columnated Ruins board:Ê
"FELLOW FANS: I have played Alan Boyd's "CHANNEL SURFING" album more than ten times and I'm still hearing new things with each play. This is one -- no -- the best (sounds like) Beach Boy music album to be released since the band stopped making music like this... It has all -- and I mean ALL -- the stops pulled out. There is not a bad song on this album. Every cut is a winner and although you may listen to this CD over and over, I doubt you will want to skip over any song to select a few favorites. From me to you don't wait, don't walk -- run to your computer and order this album ASAP. It is a winner and definitely Good Listening."
In the first month following the release of CHANNEL SURFING, there has been a flurry of promotional activities surrounding the album, including:
1) A promotional trip to England, where Alan was the featured guest at the annual BEACH BOYS BRITAIN fan convention in Lutterworth, held on December 4th in honor of the 60th birthday of the late DENNIS WILSON. Alan performed two songs from his album, spoke at length about his association with the Beach Boys, and led the traditional "Harmony Workshop," this year centered on the title track from Alan's own CD. Response from participants and audience members alike has been overwhelmingly positive.
2) While in England, Alan was a featured guest on the radio programme JUKE BOX DRIVE-IN, broadcast from Hertfordshire. The show, also broadcast live over the internet, attracted fans from around the world- many of whom took the time to send in greetings and positive comments about the new album. In addition to playing some of his own music, Alan also talked at length about his film and video work with The Beach Boys and The Monkees, for whom Alan directed and edited a television documentary back in 1996 for the Disney Channel.
3) In England, Alan also had numerous interviews for various Beach Boys' fanzines and music magazines, including Beach Boys Stomp, 20/20, and The Record Collector. Additional reviews and interviews are planned for the upcoming months. Promotional activities will be continuing in the New Year, including further radio appearances, interviews, live performances, beginning with an appearance Alan is making with ADAM MARSLAND'S CHAOS band in February 2005 at a special tribute show highlighting the music of DENNIS & CARL WILSON.
4) Later in the month, Alan traveled to Big Sur, California, where he performed at a benefit concert with AL JARDINE of The Beach Boys at Jardine's Red Barn studio. Alan played a solo rendition of "You're The Beautiful" at the piano, and later joined Al and the band HEY STEVIE onstage, singing backing vocals on Little Saint Nick and California Girls for the encore. It was a magical night, highlighted also by a dramatic reading by poet STEVE KALINICH from his Galactic Symphony. For Boyd, being invited to sing onstage with Jardine was the fulfillment of a longtime musical dream!
5) December also saw the publication of the latest issue of ENDLESS SUMMER QUARTERLY, featuring a full-paged ad for CHANNEL SURFING designed by ESQ editor DAVID BEARD. The current issue, focusing on the recent triumphant release of Brian Wilson Presents SMILE, and including a special edition bonus CD from Brian, is expected to generate the highest number of subscribers in the history of ESQ.
Promotional activities will be continuing in the New Year, including further radio appearances, interviews, live performances, beginning with an appearance Alan is making with ADAM MARSLAND'S CHAOS band in February 2005 at a special tribute show highlighting the music of DENNIS & CARL WILSON.
