5) Miss America 1926 (Instrumental) (1:17) 2001

This little ditty was used as the score for a vintage silent newsreel for American Movie Classics in 2001. A wonderful left turn result of Alan's Tin Pan Alley fixation.

Guilty as charged - I certainly DO have a fixation with Tin Pan Alley, and all of those wonderful songs from the 1920's and 30's. I've been known to bore people senseless playing old Paul Whiteman tracks until they're ready to cry "No more! Play some Ted Nugent fer chrissakes!" This tune was originally called TAKING THE DOG FOR A WALK AND STOPPING TO PLAY IN THE PARK, but in 2001 when we were preparing a package of vintage newsreels for AMC, I dusted off this track and used it to score a cute clip about the 1926 Miss America Pageant. Someday I gotta put words to this ditty…

6) Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (1:10) 1999

A comforting lullaby for a lonely soul,… Notice the lovely vocal of Irene Liberatore!

A little snippet of a demo, recorded on Irene's 4 track cassette recorder. I guess it's inspired by one of those moments of great loneliness when it's comforting to know that there's some positive, creative force out there that we can draw on for strength… if we let it. And THAT'S the hard part, isn't it? Besides that, it was just a nice opportunity to have Irene sing.

7) Beach Boys Britain (1:43) 2002

Back To the Beach - BBB Convention 2002!

On a visit to Casa Contenta, Dane and Marisa's Conover's place in Northern California, we got inspired and had some fun coming up with this jingle for one of Val Johnson-Howe's BBB gatherings in England. This was our first experience with the new digital technology of "Virtual Tracks" and we had a great time going crazy stacking vocals upon vocals, especially on the tag - which was inspired by Brian Wilson's persistent "Ding Dang / ShorteninŐ Bread" obsession (dedicated Wilsonologists should know exactly what I'm talking about!)

8) I Can't Wait To Fall Asleep Tonight (3:51) 1993

This song is from 1993 but still true to date. Story of a guy dreaming of a girl. Alan puts everything but the kitchen sink into this one.

This was a deliberate Brian Wilson "spoof," and if there'd been a kitchen sink in Steve Rapa's home studio, I would have played that as well. Longtime Northern California friend Mysti Rubert plays the part of "The Girl."
